According to the American Kennel Club, the Labrador, Golden Retriever and German shepherd are three of the five most popular pet dogs. These breeds are each large dogs bred for hard work and stamina. But as pets, these breeds of dogs are often relegated to suburban backyards. Being contained in confined space with excess engery and boredom can lead to destructive behavior. To combat this undesirable behavior, it is recommended to provide plenty of exercise suitable for the breed of dog. Exercise is an important part of a dog's life. And exercise also happens to be an often overlooked cause of behavior problems. To keep your dog both healthy and happy your dog probably needs more exercise than you might think. A large breed dog should get at least 30 minutes of heart-pumping exercise at least three or four days a week, if not daily. For small breeds, exercise is still a vital part to good health. Although they don't need much, small breeds still benefit from regular exercise. But keep in mind that a dog with small legs will tire faster than a larger dog. A yorkie, pug or corgi can get sufficient exercise in a small yard or during a brisk walk. Dogs that are able to get plenty of exercise are less likely to develop behavior problems and more likely to overcome previously established problems. They are also more likely to live a healthier life. |
