Got a Bad Bird? If you want to correct bad behavior in your bird, you must be consistent and try to think like a bird. By nature, birds vocalize as they socialize and if you try loudly scolding your bird, he may take it as praise and you will have completely lost the opportunity to correct the bird.
When your bird misbehaves, have the bird step up onto your hand and hold him at eye level. Birds may understand tone of voice even if they don't understand the word. Calmly and firmly in a low tone, repeat one phrase several times, that you will use as your corrective phrase. What you say is important, so have it be something easy to remember, like "Bad Bird" or "No, Petey". The point is to be short, unemotional and consistent.
Birds interpret facial expressions, use this to your advantage and frown at your bird when you are correcting him. Repeat your corrective phrase and then place him back into his cage. He should stay on bird "time out" for several minutes. Don't engage in any conversation with your bird during this time.
When several minutes have passes, approach your bird with a happy face and cheerful tone of voice. Praise him and play for a few minutes. Eventually, your bird may begin to understand that not all his actions are pleasing to you and he'll learn which are not.
This method of positive reinforcement as correction of bad behavior is not a fast fix for the problem. Some birds will respond faster than others, and some may not respond at all. If you decided to try correcting your bird's bad behavior, just remember that consistency and patience are essential.
