Feline respiratory disease is not a subject to take lightly. Feline respiratory disease (FIV) has many similarities to the HIV virus found in humans; however it is not possible for people to become infected. With cats it is generally spread by biting scratching and fighting. Stray cats are at risk of contracting this disease as they tend to fight more. The cases of cats infected with FIV are not rare and there is no cure once this disease has infected your cat. Usually once a cat is diagnosed it is too late and it will ultimately be fatal. The good news is that there is a potent practical and effective vaccine available against this disease. Fel-O-Vax vaccine has been shown to be effective at preventing infection by FIV. The initial course requires 3 vaccinations at 2-4 week intervals with an annual booster recommended. This vaccine can be administered at the same time as the annual core vaccines. |
