When a previously housetrained dog suddenly starts having frequent accidents in improper places, it is always a sign that something is wrong. Your first response should be to consult with your veterinarian. Your dog may have a medical condition that this causing the break in housetraining. When the problem is medical, all the reprimands and discipline can have no effect other than to make your dog feel badly about something he has no control over.
It is extremely important to identify whether the problem is medical or behavioral. There are several diseases and conditions that can result in inappropriate elimination, especially as your dog matures. Only your veterinarian can make the determination whether your dog is suffering from true incontinence, a urinary tract infections (UTI), frequent urination associated with a medical or hormonal issue or if the problem is purely behavioral.
