The best way to relieve feline boredom is more play time! It's especially rewarding to the cat to be playing with a family member, but even solo playtime is better than none. Most cats won't be able to resist the fishing pole type toys, but you may have to try different play styles and movement speeds to really engage your cat. Some cats find laser light toys completely irresistible, others won't care at all. You'll quickly be able to tell which "moving prey" type of toy your cat prefers by their excitement when they see the toy and level of interaction.
Cats love high places. It gives them the hunter's advantage of being able to see the entire landscape, so even if the vista is just the living room, higher is better! Cat furniture with multilevels, secluded hiding spots and plenty of lounge areas will greatly expand his kingdom. Make sure it also has sisal covered scratching posts and you'll be meeting all of your cat's natural behavior needs as well as giving him a new place to play. If you are a multicat family, remember that there's no such thing as too many high places to perch!
Did you think that only children got bored with their toys? Not so! Cats also become bored with toys, so be sure that you have a variety of toys on hand. Change them out on a regular basis, completely removing the old toys before you give them new ones. Cats are stimulated by the change in shape, scent, sound and colors. Just like kids, they'll appreciate an empty box once in a while too. Empty shopping bags and kitty play tunnels are just a couple of other ideas.
Catnip is another fun diversion for you cat. It's the scent of the natural essential oils in catnip that attract cats, so the fresher the catnip, the more likely your cat will go nuts for it. Cats will usually roll around in the catnip and eat some of it in the process. There's no harm to giving your cat catnip as often as you like. Just watch your toes when the placid kitty becomes a hunting lion!
By now you're probably getting the idea that your cat is a lot like a small child in it's needs for creative stimulation and you're right! When selecting toys, just keep in mind your cat's natural instincts and always make sure that you are buying a pet safe toy.
