How do you know if your pet is in an emergency situation? When do you
call your vet? Should you go to the emergency clinic? Every pet owner
has dealt with these questions, and the answers are not always so easy.
Here are a few basic things to know about pet emergencies.
Pet emergencies can be classified in ways that are similar to a human
emergency. Things to look for include:
- High temperature above 103° F
- Low temperature below 99° F
- Profuse bleeding
- Broken bones
- Difficultly breathing
- Seizures
- Collapse or fainting
- Poisoning
- Snake or spider bites
- Diarrhea or vomiting more than 3 times an hour
- Inability to deliver puppies or kittens
If at anytime you have any doubts, call your veterinarian and be prepared
to describe what is going on with your pet. Your vet can help determine
if your pet needs emergency care or if you can wait until morning.
