Teaching your dog how to sit may be a basic trick, but still requires work and determination for success.
Directions for small to medium dogs
- Begin by holding onto the collar while the dog is in the standing position.
- Using the command, "SIT," gently push down on the dog's hind quarters.
- Once the dog sits, give praise.
- Repeat
- Gradually, the dog will start recognizing the word "SIT" and the action.
- Once this recognization is established, only slight pressure on the hind quarters should make him sit.
- Repeat until just speaking the word, "sit" makes the dog sit.
Directions for large dogs or more stubborn dog
Because a larger dog cannot be simply forced to sit, a different tactic must be used.
- Hold a dog treat slightly over the dog's nose, but not too high as the dog will jump.
- Use the command, "SIT."
- As the dog looks up, it will automatically sit.
- Praise and feed the treat.
- If the dog does not sit, hold the treat slightly higher.
- Repeat until the treat is not longer necessary.
