If you have a dog and just happen to be overweight, it is likely that your dog is as well. But you are in luck because you have the pefect exercise partner.

Just as obesity is a growing concern among humans, weight gain among pet dogs must be monitored as well. To combat obesity there is a simple formula, less food and more exercise. A relatively easy way to add more exercise is to institue a regular walk for you and your dog. By exercising with your dog, you not only help your dog but yourself as well. Your dog will also motivate you once a routine is established by remembering when walk time is and alerting you. A dog is the perfect exercise partner because the dog cannot offer excuses or alternative to not walking.

Instituting a regular walk does take a bit of preparation. A good pair of walking shoes for you and a collar and leash for the dog are the main items needed. Be sure that you are wearing clothes that fit well, do not right up or down and are comfortable enough. Plan to begin with a short walk such as walking around your block twice. Save the long, extended walks as something to build up to, but always be aware of how far the dog can go. A good time to begin an exercise progrm is Spring. Although many choose to begin an exercise program as a New Year's Resolution, beginning in spring is ideal as the days become warmer and longer.
