Presctiption Osurnia Otic Gel for Dogs

What is Osurnia?

Osurnia Otic Gel is a prescription treatment for canine ear infections (otitis externa). It contains three active ingredients—florfenicol (antibiotic), terbinafine (antifungal), and betamethasone acetate (anti-inflammatory)—in a gel that coats the ear canal and provides continuous relief. The gel adheres to the ear lining, staying in place to deliver medication over time, working with your dog’s natural ear-cleaning process. Only two applications are needed, one week apart.

What is Osurnia used for?

Osurnia treats otitis externa caused by susceptible strains of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (bacteria) and Malassezia pachydermatis (yeast). These infections commonly cause ear inflammation, discharge, itching, and discomfort in dogs.

What is Otitis Externa in Dogs?

Otitis externa is an infection or inflammation of the outer ear canal. It’s a common condition in dogs, especially those with floppy ears. Causes may include bacteria, yeast, moisture, allergies, ear mites, foreign objects, or underlying skin issues.

Common Symptoms of Otitis Externa:

  • Scratching or pawing at ears
  • Head shaking or tilting
  • Red, swollen, or painful ears
  • Foul-smelling ear discharge
  • Crusting or scabbing around the ears
  • Hearing loss or balance problems (in severe cases)

Key Benefits of Osurnia

  • Treats bacterial and fungal ear infections
  • Targets Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Malassezia pachydermatis
  • Reduces inflammation, redness, and itching
  • Long-lasting relief with just two doses
  • Alcohol-free formula with soft-tip applicator
  • FDA-approved, easy-to-use treatment

Active Ingredients & How They Work

  • Florfenicol (10 mg/mL): Broad-spectrum antibiotic that stops bacterial protein synthesis, targeting common ear infection bacteria.
  • Terbinafine (10 mg/mL): Antifungal that disrupts fungal cell membranes by inhibiting ergosterol production.
  • Betamethasone acetate (1 mg/mL): Corticosteroid that reduces swelling, itching, and inflammation in the ear.
  • Inactive ingredients: Polyacrylate, medium-chain triglycerides, mineral oil, and laureth-9 for gel stability and ease of application.

Administration

  1. Your vet will clean and dry the external ear canal.
  2. Confirm the eardrum is intact before use.
  3. Apply 1 mL (one tube) into each affected ear.
  4. Repeat the application in 7 days.
  5. Do not clean the ears for 45 days after the first dose.

Precautions & Warnings

  • For dogs only. Not for use in cats or other animals.
  • Do not use if the eardrum is perforated.
  • Do not administer orally or by injection.
  • Use with caution in dogs with liver or hearing issues.
  • Avoid contact with eyes. May cause severe irritation in humans.
  • Wear gloves and protective eyewear during application.
  • Keep out of reach of children and animals.

Storage Instructions

  • Store at or below 77°F (25°C).

Common Side Effects

  • Vomiting
  • Elevated liver enzymes
  • Temporary hearing loss or reduced hearing
  • Ear pain or increased head shaking
  • Disorientation or balance issues
  • Eye irritation (if accidental contact occurs)

Most side effects are mild and resolve on their own. Contact your veterinarian if symptoms persist or worsen.
